Teaching & Learning

We did a year of homeschooling for 2013-2014 and put our son back into the school system for 2014-2015.  Homeschooling is HARD.  It requires a lot of support for the parent-teacher. I'm glad I did it and it changed a lot of my preconceived notions about the process.  We're still taking it year by year.

We began homeschooling this August 2013, so I'm a total newbie.  I'm a certified teacher (Grades 6-12 English, Gifted Certified) and have taught in the school system or tutored for the last 11 years...which means absolutely nothing when faced with your own kid each day across the table!  I have great affinity and affection for public school teachers (since I was one) and was blessed to have my son in early intervention classes as a 3 and 4 year old.  Our decision to homeschool was inspired by many reasons, namely that I felt called to do it and that my son's needs could best be met at home.  It was scary and seemingly counterintuitive (after all, kids with autism need 75 specialists chiming in on every decision, right?) but also empowering.  I like knowing exactly what we have done each day and surprisingly, have been able to let go of the "let's pack every minute with some therapy" mindset of early diagnosis days.  Our commitment to homeschool is one we plan to take year by year, child by child.

Right now we are about 5 weeks into the curriculum.  We have been studying 3D shapes, city/country theme, and the senses.  The nerd in me loves to see stacks of books to be loved and used!

Here are a few posts on our homeschool launch and some bloggers I follow that homeschool:
